In the 1800s, carriage making was a booming industry in Oakland, and most wheelwrights doubled as blacksmiths—hand-forging the iron rims that gave the wheels their strength and durability. By 1878, Oakland was home to 25 carriage makers, including Grand Central Carriage Works, located on 12th Street between Harrison and Alice—just up the road from where Oakland United Beerworks stands today.
