English Style Dark Mild

Dark mild: Too often low alcohol means no flavor. Not so with English dark milds! They are one of the original session styles and it was a popular lunch pint in the dark satanic mills of the industrial revolution. The smaller, lighter cousin to porter, mild is traditionally served on cask at warmer temperatures and with just a touch of natural carbonation. Ours is lightly sweet upfront with a hint of graham cracker that ends with a quenchingly dry finish. The nose is all toasted bread crust, biscotti, and a dusting of cocoa; the palate is round and malty, with a touch of earthy East Kent Golding hops on the back end. A whisper of roast brings up the rear and has the effect of drying out the palate and encouraging another sip. The best milds are a showcase of the freshest hand-turned, floor-malted barley and ours is just that, thanks to California-grown barley, locally germinated and kilned malted at Admiral Maltings. With a beer this small, you can pull pints for hours without falling off your stool.
